Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about our AI-powered artwork valuation process

Artwork Submission

Why do you need the artist's name?

The artist's name helps us evaluate market positioning and comparable sales trends. However, our system does not simply rely on the name provided. We perform image-based validation to determine whether the artwork visually aligns with the submitted artist information. If inconsistencies are detected, they are clearly flagged in your report.

What does "Medium" mean?

Medium refers to the materials and technique used to create the artwork. Examples include: • Oil on Canvas • Acrylic on Canvas • Watercolor • Mixed Media • Limited Edition Print / Lithograph • Sculpture • Other Different mediums carry different market dynamics and resale behavior. The medium also helps us determine whether the work appears original or reproduced.

Why is the year important?

The creation year helps establish: • The work's place within an artist's career • Historical context • Period relevance • Market comparables from similar timeframes If unknown, you may leave it blank. The AI will rely more heavily on visual and material cues.

How should I measure dimensions?

Accurate dimensions help our AI generate the most precise valuation possible. Provide height × width (and depth if applicable). Examples: • 24 × 36 inches • 61 × 91 cm • 12 × 18 × 6 inches (for sculpture) Larger works often command stronger resale prices, but this varies by artist and medium. If you don't know the size of your artwork, you can measure it instantly using your smartphone: 📱 iPhone 1. Open the built-in Measure app 2. Point your camera at the artwork 3. Tap the "+" button at one corner 4. Move to the opposite corner and tap "+" again 5. The app will display the measurement immediately 📱 Android Most Android devices include a built-in measuring tool (often called Measure or AR Measure). If you don't see one, you can download a free measuring app from the Google Play Store in seconds. For Best Accuracy: • Stand directly in front of the artwork • Keep your phone steady • Measure the visible artwork area (not the frame, unless permanently attached) • Enter height × width in inches Even an approximate measurement is sufficient — precision within half an inch is more than adequate.

What do the condition ratings mean?

Condition significantly impacts resale value. • Excellent — No visible flaws • Very Good — Minor wear only • Good — Visible wear, structurally sound • Fair — Noticeable wear or minor damage • Poor — Significant damage or restoration needed Be as accurate as possible. Visible condition in images will also be evaluated.

Images & Documentation

Can I take photos directly in the app?

Yes — on phones and tablets you can tap 'Take Photo' during upload to capture the artwork instantly. Tips for best results: • Use natural lighting • Avoid glare or flash • Photograph straight-on • Ensure signatures and text are legible You can capture the front view, then add back-of-artwork, signature close-ups, and edition details for higher confidence scores.

Why can I upload multiple images?

Artwork valuation improves dramatically when we can review: • Front view (required) • Back of artwork • Signature close-up • Edition/numbering detail • Frame detail The reverse side often reveals labels, stretcher construction, age indicators, and gallery history. Signature and edition close-ups significantly improve confidence scoring. Uploading more visual evidence increases valuation reliability.

Why can I upload supporting documents?

Documentation can materially impact confidence and valuation. You may upload documents such as: • Certificate of Authenticity (COA) • Bill of Sale • Gallery Invoice • Auction Receipt • Edition Documentation • Provenance Letter • Artist Correspondence • Restoration Documentation Each document is reviewed for internal consistency and alignment with image evidence. Documents are not assumed to be authentic; they are evaluated in context.

Are my uploaded documents stored?

In Phase 1 of our platform, uploaded documents are processed during valuation and are not permanently stored. This allows us to analyze documentation while maintaining a lean and privacy-conscious system.

Valuation Process

How does the two-stage validation system work?

Our system operates in two passes: Pass 1 — Validation & Classification • Cross-checks images and documents • Classifies work type (original, limited edition print, reproduction, decorative) • Flags inconsistencies • Generates an evidence confidence score Pass 2 — Market Valuation • Uses the validated classification • Applies conservative secondary-market logic • Produces a resale value range • Generates a valuation confidence score (0–100) If attribution cannot be supported, the work is valued as "attributed to," reproduction, or decorative art — not as the claimed masterwork.

What is the 0–100 Confidence Score?

Each valuation includes a numerical confidence score based on: • Image clarity • Signature/edition visibility • Document consistency • Attribution support • Condition clarity Higher scores indicate stronger alignment between visual evidence, documentation, and submitted details. Lower scores indicate missing information, inconsistencies, or reproduction risk.

What if the artwork appears to be a reproduction?

If the system determines the artwork is likely: • An open-edition reproduction • A decorative print • Inconsistent with a claimed famous artist It will be valued conservatively based on decorative resale markets. We do not assign masterwork-level values without strong supporting evidence.

What type of value do you provide?

We provide a fair market resale estimate in USD. This reflects a typical arm's-length sale in a secondary market context (auction or private resale). We do NOT provide: • Insurance replacement values • Gallery retail asking prices • Hypothetical museum valuations Our estimates are conservative by design.

How accurate is the AI valuation?

Our AI provides structured, conservative resale estimates based on image analysis and contextual logic. It is most reliable for: • Decorative art • Contemporary works • Limited edition prints • Emerging or mid-career artists For high-value works, rare artists, legal matters, or insurance coverage, a certified human appraiser is recommended.

Using Your Certificate

Can I use this for insurance?

Our certificate is not a formal insurance appraisal and is not prepared under USPAP standards. It provides an informational resale estimate only. If insuring a high-value work, consult a certified appraiser.

Is this certificate legally binding?

No. The certificate is an AI-generated market estimate for informational purposes. For estate settlements, divorce, tax donation, or legal disputes, a certified appraisal is required.

Does the valuation expire?

Art market conditions change. We recommend: • Updating valuations every 2–3 years • Reassessing before sale • Re-evaluating after major market shifts Each certificate includes the valuation date.

Privacy & Data

Are my images secure?

Images are used solely for valuation analysis and certificate generation. We do not publicly share uploaded images.

Can I re-download my certificate?

Yes. Your certificate includes a unique ID and can be saved or shared at your discretion.
